“Don’t use a zoom lens! you have legs and you should always go closer then you dare to. A wide angle lens is much more direct then a (‘much safer’) telephoto lens. Fuck the rules concerning light and horizon, throw away the rules, do your own thing. Take your time, being interested is the best introduction. Choose the pictures with your mind, not after taking them when you are watching on the screen of your camera. Don’t make to many pictures! keep your overview.”

Just installed the Disqus commenting system on my Tumblog. Took me 5 minutes. Great. Nice thing about Disqus is that it lets you login with your Twitter account for example and aggregates discussion elsewhere on the Web about something I posted. And why a commenting system at all? Like they say themselves:

“Why do people write more comments on sites using Disqus? It’s because we believe that there’s no difference between a great comment and a great blog post.”

In May, Wilco’s new album was leaked online a month before the record was released. So the band decided to stream it for free and ask fans to donate to their favorite charity. Brilliant.

Kevin Kelly on the future of the Web: Had the time to watch some peer recommended videos on TED on the plane to Madrid today. This one stood out. A 20” talk by Kelly from 2007 displaying a vision on the future of the Web which is still contemporary. Highly recommended, also for my non techy friends to see where we are heading. From a Web of computers to a Web of pages, to a Web of data - where we are now - to a Web of things. And check the part at about 15” in where he talks about identity. Basically, it’s our vision behind RealMee. A personalized Web at the cost of transparancy but centrally controlled by You.

Last Thursday I went to the Steely Dan concert in the Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam. The concert was part of their Left Bank Holiday tour. I went with my brother who shot some Qik videos - like the one above of Aja. Dutch sax player Toon Roos and his quartet were their support act - I liked him a lot. Very nice sound. And the show of the Dan themselves? I’ve seen them in 2000 and 2007 in Ahoy in Rotterdam but this was their best show. Sound was great, the horn section and drummer Keith Carlock stood out. I just finished this Dutch novel “The House of the Mosque” by Iranian dissident Kader Abdollah. I started it 3 weeks ago on our holiday to Texel. It’s his personal story and the story of the Iranian people starting in the 70’s, just before the Sjah was replaced by the Islamic nation led by the Ayatollahs. I started reading it to learn more about the Islam. Little did I know it became a really current subject with the student protests going on in Tehran as I write this. It’s a beautiful novel which reads like a Persian story - as I would imagine it. And the last chapter is impressive, very impressive. Highly recommended.

iPhone: from frustration to fantastic.

I bought the very first first iPhone when it came out a few years ago. I was so excited and couldn’t wait to give it a run.

It didn’t work for me. I couldn’t get over the lack of 3g, lack of MS Exchange support, lack of apps (no app store in those days), no copy & paste, no email search, poor battery, and an odd headphone jack connector. I wanted it to work for me. It was so frustrating.

I went back to my trusty blackberry curve.

Then the iPhone 3g came out and promised a lot. It came with an App Store, 3g speeds and MS Exchange support. My friend Nabeel and I got up early and bought that phone on opening day.

I lived with that phone for a few months but slowly found myself carrying around two devices. iPhone and Blackberry. I still couldn’t get over the frequently slow/delay keyboard bug, lack of copy & paste, lack of search, slow processor, poor camera & poor battery life.

Then i dumped the iPhone altogether and just used the Blackberry. I couldn’t take the iPhone shortcomings and carrying two phones isn’t my thing.

When a friend helped me install an early beta of iPhone OS 3.0 OS I knew that things were getting better. At last we had search & copy/paste. Yes!

On Friday, I received the iPhone 3gs. I’m still in the honeymoon phase but this thing is fantastic. Better battery, plus it’s fast. I did a web browsing speed test with my colleague Rob Go who has the previous 3g model. The 3gs blew him away.

The OS is smooth. Copy & paste and search are lighting quick. I can type really fast. The camera is excellent and I’m already having a ball with video recording.

I have had a love/hate relationship with the iPhone over the years. But I’m back and this is the phone I’ve been waiting for.

Agree, that’s the only thing that bothers me with my 3G: it should be faster!
